Mentor Spotlight

  • Tyler is one of our Mentors studying Computer Science at UW Seattle and interning at Amazon this summer.

When/how did you get into tech?
I wasn’t really exposed to tech until 11th grade in high school when I joined my school’s robotics team. I learned about building a robot and programming all of its commands which started my interest in the field. The following year in 12th grade I took with my friends AP Computer Science and it built a foundation of passion and desire to learn how to program. Once in college I learned

  • about many different types of engineering and confirmed that I wanted to go into tech as a computer science major. It just took me stepping out of my comfort zone and joining a club I was curious about but knew no one to open a path towards a passion.

    Favorite quarantine hobby?
I’ve been going on runs and hiking to exercise and get fresh air after being trapped inside most of the day. I’ve also spent a lot of time playing on my switch, mostly Animal Crossing and Mario Kart

Advice for students/developer about learning CS?
Everyone starts learning coding at different times and paces. Don’t be ashamed or scared to ask questions or not know something. Everyone is always learning and growing as a programmer. I’ve worked with people my age who have been coding 10 years more than me or 3 years less than me. Everyone remembers how hard it was to start and will want to help you succeed just like those who had someone help them.

  • What's your favorite part about studying tech/engineering?
How it affects and has positions in every industry. It is easy to just think of the big tech companies when thinking about a job in tech but tech jobs are everywhere. You can combine your passions for anything with computer science and apply it. I love that tech has the capability to enable every industry to advance and help others follow their passions.

    Favorite song/artist/movie recommendations?
My favorite artists currently are Niki, Rich Brian and the rest of 88Rising. I was very fortunate to see them on tour 2 years ago. One of my favorite movies is SpiderMan: Into the Spider-Verse (On Netflix).

    Fun Fact
I can crush drink a water bottle in a second.
