• Welcome to Developer Hacks!

What is a hackathon? A hackathon is a coding event hosted by a tech company or organization where YOU, hackers, will create awesome projects with a team or by yourself! This year, we are the hosting the first ever Developer Hacks, the 3 week long hackathon for students to work on their final projects. Throughout the last 3 weeks of our program, our program structure will change drastically. All activities will now be optional because there is just so much to learn! Our mentors and team have been working hard to put each hackathon workshop together to teach you cool CS concepts, which may be beneficial to your final projects. The hackathon workshops will build off of skills you've learned in the web dev / data programming tracks.

Mentor Spotlight

  • Alyssa is our Mentor who helps test our weekly coding session activities.

When/how did you get into tech?
I got into tech at a really young age! In fact, I think I was about 8 when I first hopped on Codeacademy and coded my first HTML page. Ever since then I’ve been in love with all things tech – from computers, to phones, to video games. I didn’t truly get into coding though until I took a class in my college freshman year. I was terrified to do so, since my perception of tech

  • had always been that it was a hyper competitive “boys club” and that without prior experience, there would be no way I could pass the class. However, my perceptions quickly changed when I tried it and realized that I could succeed if I put in the work and used the resources of my TA, my professor and office hours (and Stack Overflow).

    Favorite quarantine hobby?
I have been spending a lot of my time in various discord and zoom calls with friends! We play video games, watch movies together, and play board games. It really helps from feeling too lonely during social distancing!

Advice for students/developer about learning CS?
Remember that there is more to coding than just getting it to work! Readability, comments, and writing easily updated code will save you in the future when you return to it in five months, or when a peer or co-worker looks over it!

  • What's your favorite part about studying tech/engineering?
I really enjoy the amount of social good you can perform on a large scale. Websites can disseminate important information widely and quickly, apps can ease the struggle of daily tasks, and some tech like heart monitors or online therapy can improve our physical and mental health!

    Favorite song/artist/movie recommendations?
I am going through a huge nostalgia boom of what I listened to and watched as a kid. From those, I recommend Big Time Rush, Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and Drake and Josh! The Mentor Panel will be on Friday, 8/7 @ 2:30PM.
