• A Glimpse of Week 4

We know last week was a lot of work, so we will slow things down this week. A quick preview of this week - We will have a guest speaker from Google for our Career Friday activity and our very first Web Development Escape Room that is Minecraft themed (shoutout to Mentor Elisa for making this)! We will not have a workshop this week because our coding sessions will be more challenging.

In Web Development we will be diving more into Javascript, especially understanding how to modify the DOM and Events! In Data Programming, we will be learning how to better organize our code into Functions. We recommend that you review some Javascript covered last week, as the lessons this week will build off your understanding from last week. Make sure to put good use of the Javascript Cheat Sheets to help you recall new syntax. Again, the mentors are actively on Discord to help you so make sure to ask good questions :) We look forward to see you all in Mentoring Sessions.

  • A Gift from STEM League + T-Mobile

Our Program sponsor, T-Mobile, will be sending swag gifts to all students. Along with this gift, we will be sending students a Developer Program certificate for being a part of our Program. As long as you are on track, feel free to fill out the survey to the left so we can send your package to you!

  • STEM League Coding Tournament Scrapbook

The Final House Winners and House Cup scoring will be revealed in the book!

Mentor Spotlight

  • Elisa is one of our Web Development Instructors and the creator of the Minecraft Challenge and DOM Lesson.

When/how did you get into tech?
My journey of getting into technology is a somewhat long story with not knowing what field to go into and switching back and forth between the medical field and technology. Although I’d consider the first time I got into technology was when I took my first web programming class. I really enjoyed the creative aspect of web programming, and it was just really fun to do.

  • Favorite quarantine hobby?
I’ve been enjoying walks with my family! It’s a really relaxing thing to do but also a great way to exercise. Most of the time, we just walk around my neighborhood but sometimes we walk really long distances (~6 miles)!

Advice for students/developer about learning CS?
Learning anything new is always challenging, and one advice I’d give to someone who is learning CS is to always ask questions. There is nothing wrong with not knowing something or asking about something you’re confused with. There will be people who, no doubt, have the same question or is as confused as you, and you’ll be helping others out. Whenever I’m confused with a topic, I just keep asking questions and if I’m still confused I’ll let the other person know so they can explain it a different way or I look to other sources. When it comes to learning CS my other advice or moreso statement is Google is your friend! There’s a ton of resources out there. Don’t be afraid to use the internet to find your answers!

  • What's your favorite part about studying tech/engineering?
My favorite part of studying tech/engineering is the projects that I get to do. The content that I’m learning is really just building blocks or tools that I can apply to anything I want, like if I want to make a website that is a catalog that students can access, I can do that or if I want to make a game I can do that. The possibilities are endless, and all I need is a working computer and internet to get started. :)

    Favorite song/artist/movie recommendations?
I’m a big movie/show watcher. From anime to kdramas to Marvel movies, I enjoy them all! I haven’t done this in a while, but I think that rewatching the Harry Potter series over again always reminds me how epic the series was in the past and even now. I’m sure you’ve heard of Harry Potter, since you all did a coding themed tournament about it! Other movies I like to watch are: Spirited Away, and the Help. I’d also highly highly recommend the show: Avatar the Last Airbender (if you have Netflix, it’s on there!).
